Bill Guerin secured cap flexibility by re-signing the young forward to a team-friendly deal, clearing the path for the Minnetonka native to seize a vacant roster spot.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Just one day after declining to issue Bobby Brink a qualifying offer, the Minnesota Wild has officially brought the young forward back on a new contract before he could reach unrestricted free agency on July 1.

The decision ends what was a brief period of uncertainty surrounding Brink's future with the organization. By not extending his $4 million qualifying offer, the Wild allowed themselves to negotiate a new deal at a lower cap hit rather than being locked into the one-year qualifying offer.

At the time, the move raised some eyebrows, but it always appeared to be a salary cap decision rather than an indication that Minnesota wanted to move on from the 24-year-old forward.

With roughly $9 million in cap space entering free agency and several roster spots still needing to be addressed, every dollar mattered for general manager Bill Guerin.

Re-signing Brink on a more affordable contract gives the Wild additional financial flexibility while keeping a young forward they still believe can contribute.

His contract is a one-year contract at $2.75 million. The Wild now have $6.7 million in cap space.

Brink now returns to a Minnesota roster that is expected to look different next season. Veterans Vladimir Tarasenko, Mats Zuccarello, and Marcus Johansson are all moving on, opening opportunities throughout the Wild's forward group.

The Minnetonka native will now have another chance to establish himself as an everyday NHL player and earn a larger role heading into the 2026-27 season.

For Minnesota, the strategy ultimately paid off. Rather than committing to Brink's $4 million qualifying offer, the Wild were able to retain the forward on a new deal while preserving valuable salary cap space heading into free agency.
