At the 2025 NHL trade deadline, the New Jersey Devils acquired Brian Dumoulin from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick and prospect Herman Traff. The Devils' decision to bring in Dumoulin was easy to understand, as they certainly needed more experienced defensive depth.
Dumoulin fit in beautifully with the Devils after being acquired. In 19 regular-season games with the Metropolitan Division club, he had one goal, six points, and 14 hits. He was also relied upon by the Devils during the playoffs, playing at least 23 minutes each game. This included two games where he had over 36 minutes of playing time.
Now, the Devils must decide if they want to keep Dumoulin around or let him walk. They have limited cap space heading into the off-season and are expected to make changes to their group, so there is a chance that the Devils could move on from the left-shot defenseman. If he does hit the market on July 1, there should be plenty of interest in him in free agency.
Dumoulin is a defenseman that teams love to have around, as he is reliable defensively, can handle top-four minutes, and kills penalties. In addition, he has a lot of playoff experience and two Stanley Cup championships on his resume, which only adds to his appeal.
With all of this, if the Devils are unable to re-sign Dumoulin, don't be surprised if there are plenty of suitors for him in July. It will be interesting to see what happens with him from here.
