Fitzgerald confirmed that the Devils' roster will be different next season due to how this campaign went for the Metropolitan Division club.
"We won't be coming back with the same group because it was just not good enough," Fitzgerald said. "I like our group. My job is to continue to better the group, and we've got a lot of decisions to make on certain players, bringing guys back, trade players..."
Hearing that Fitzgerald plans to make changes to the Devils' roster this off-season is understandable. While they got back into the post-season this year, they were quickly bounced out of the playoffs in just five games by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round.
The Devils are entering the summer with an array of pending unrestricted free agents. Among them are Jake Allen, Brian Dumoulin, Tomas Tatar, Nate Bastian, Curtis Lazar, Dennis Cholowski, Daniel Sprong, and Justin Dowling. Thus, we could see several departures for the Devils this summer.
It will be fascinating to see what kind of moves Fitzgerald makes this off-season from here. It is clear that he is ready to make changes.
