The New Jersey Devils have several pending free agents this off-season. Among the bunch is forward Nathan Bastian, who just completed the two-year, $2.7 million contract he signed with New Jersey during the 2023 NHL off-season.

Bastian, 27, appeared in 59 games this season with the Devils, posting four goals, 10 points, 138 hits, and a minus-4 rating. This is after he had five goals and 12 points in 54 games with the Devils during the 2023-24 campaign.

While speaking to reporters following the Devils' first-round series loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, Bastian made it clear that his hope is to stay in New Jersey. However, should the Devils look to re-sign the 6-foot-4 forward?

There is an argument to be had for the Devils to keep Bastian around, especially if he is willing to re-sign with the club on an affordable deal. The 2016 second-round pick has been a nice part of the Devils' bottom six for quite some time and gives their group more size and grit. In 264 games over six seasons and two stints with the Devils, he has posted 32 goals, 66 points, and 734 hits.

However, after a tough post-season, it would also be understandable if the Devils wanted to makes changes to their bottom six this off-season. This is especially so if Bastian's asking price is too high for the Devils.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Devils and Bastian can agree to a new contract before July 1. If he hits the free-agent market, he should get some interest, as teams are always on the hunt for big forwards for their bottom six.
