New Jersey Devils goaltender Jake Allen has had a strong 2024-25 season as the team's backup. In 30 appearances, he has a 2.61 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage, and four shutouts. He also stepped up very nicely when Devils starter Jacob Markstrom was sidelined from late January to early March.
Due to his solid campaign, Allen has gotten some praise. In Chris Johnston's free agent big board for The Athletic, Allen was ranked at the No. 15 spot and was the only goalie who made the cut.
It is understandable that Allen is being viewed as a top free agent heading into the off-season. The 34-year-old has been effective this season and could be a solid pickup for a team looking for help between the pipes, especially if used in a 1B role. In addition, with the goalie free-agent market being weaker this campaign, he could generate a ton of interest.
However, given how well Allen has played this season for the Devils, it would be understandable if they looked to sign him to a contract extension before July 1. It will be interesting to see if they can do just that from here.
