Earlier this month, it was reported that the New Jersey Devils would not send pending restricted free agent (RFA) forward Cody Glass a qualifying offer and instead let him hit the market as an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1. However, it appears that they have now changed their minds on that front.
According to PuckPedia, the Devils will be tendering a qualifying offer to Glass. With this, they will retain his signing rights instead of letting him become a UFA on July 1.
This update from PuckPedia comes shortly after NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported on SN 590 that he heard the Devils were now planning to send Glass a qualifying offer due to the interest in him being so high.
"The word this morning was that New Jersey heard how much interest there was in Cody Glass, and they changed their minds. So we'll see," Friedman said on the matter.
When noting that several of this year's pending UFA centers have now re-signed with their teams, Glass likely would have been a hot commodity had the Devils decided not to send him a qualifying offer. Now, Glass should be sticking around in New Jersey, where he will look to be a solid part of their bottom six.
Glass' qualifying offer is worth $2.5 million. While that is not necessarily the lowest number, it is not an outrageous amount for the 26-year-old center. This is especially so if he translates his solid start with the Devils to next season.
In 14 games with the Devils after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline, Glass recorded two goals, seven points, 10 hits, and a plus-4 rating.
NHL Rumors: 3 Teams Who Could Sign Devils' Brian Dumoulin
Brian Dumoulin is one of the New Jersey Devils’ most notable pending unrestricted free agents (UFAs). He proved to be a solid trade deadline addition for the Devils, but there is a realistic chance that he will hit the market on July 1.
