Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella has received a two-game suspension and a $50,000 fine after getting into it with a referee during the Flyers' game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
The suspension and fine have been issued by the office of NHL vice president and director of hockey operations Colin Campbell. The official release stated, "unprofessional conduct directed at the officials by refusing to leave the bench area after being assessed a game misconduct" as the reason for the suspension.
After about 10 minutes into the first period, Tortorella was caught on camera arguing with an official, with his rant quickly turning explicit, and the referee promptly ejected Tortorella from the game. He initially refused, and repeated multiple times that he wouldn't leave.
There was speculation that Tortorella could receive suspensions and/or a fine, to which Flyers CEO Dan Hilferty publicly announced that he would pay any fine that Tortorella received.
The two-game suspension means that the head coach will not be present on the bench for the Flyers' home games against the San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs.
