Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports - Former Flyers Defender Having Rough Season

The Philadelphia Flyers are having one of the strangest seasons. They were pegged to be a bottom-feeder in the league by many insiders and pundits.

    They are proving everyone wrong.

With 64 points in 54 games they currently sit third in the Metropolitan Division. Only the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers are ahead of them in the standings - with 65 and 71 points respectively.

This wasn't supposed to happen to a team in the middle of a rebuild - but it's happening to the Flyers. It's a great problem to have for a team that is working hard to build a great team.

Part of building a great team is knowing who to trade and who to keep. One of these moves appears to have paid off greatly, considering how one exiting player has been performing so far this season on their new team.

Tony DeAngelo is having a rough time playing for the Hurricanes this season. For starters, he's playing the least amount of his entire career.

His career average time on ice is 19:08. This year he is averaging 14:12 a game. Over his last seven games his ice time has ranged from 13:47 to 3:53.

He started the year playing every game. But in late November, he began seeing long stretches of games where he was a healthy scratch. He's had two runs of 10 games scratched in a row. He's only played 23 games this season.

The Flyers look to be heading in the right direction - under new leadership in management, their coaching staff and the players.
