Montreal Canadiens' defenseman Kaiden Guhle has been suspended for one game without pay for slashing Philadelphia Flyers' forward Travis Konecny from the bench during the teams' latest meeting on Mar. 28.
The slash was not called by officials during the game, but during postgame media, Konecny's teammate Garnet Hathaway alluded that the incident was being looked into by the league.
"I think the league will look at something that they saw during the game that the refs told us they didn't see," Hathaway said. "I think that will come to light in a little bit."
On the morning of Mar. 29, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced that Guhle would have a hearing to determine whether or not he would receive any consequences for the slash.
The department stated that "under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Guhle will forfeit $4,496.53." The money from the fine will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
There were mixed opinions from viewers over whether or not the slash constituted further review, much less any kind of suspension.
Some accused Konecny of overreacting to the contact.
Others are surprised he didn't have more of a reaction.
The Flyers would end up falling to the Canadiens 4-1.
