Morgan Frost Discusses Increased Maturity During Flyers' Season, Mending Relationship With John Tortorella

A central theme to the Philadelphia Flyers' 2023-24 season has been growth and taking strides to be better in the face of doubters, and perhaps no Flyer has experienced that more than Morgan Frost.

Frost dealt with more than his fair share of adversity in the beginning of the season, having to contend with being several healthy scratches, along with what felt like general distrust in his playing from head coach John Tortorella.

Another player might have been defeated by the lack of opportunity, but Frost used it as a chance to evolve as a player and a person.

"I feel like I matured a lot, especially going through some hard times at the start of the season and kind of coming out of it," he said. "Just in general, from my first year to now, I feel like I've grown up a lot. I've learned how to handle situations and, in general, from the start of the year, I think there's been a good amount of growth for me."

His season took off after he now-famously requested a meeting with Tortorella to advocate for his playing abilities, and he established himself as one of the Flyers' most important offensive players. Additionally, he's learned the best way to approach his relationship with Tortorella.

"I think I've grown a lot in learning how to handle things with [Tortorella] and how to interact," he said. "It's still something where I think there's gonna be more going on there, but at the same time, I don't think [the relationship has been damaged]."

Figuring out how to have effective communication with one of the toughest coaches in the league is a huge step in itself, but Frost also enjoyed an excellent season in terms of his own personal fitness, even when mental and physical exhaustion hit the team towards the home stretch of the season.

"I think this is one of the best seasons I've had in terms of health, so yeah, no complaints there," he said. "I was doing good. In general, towards the end there, the pressure started to build and maybe a little bit of mental fatigue kicked in and obviously there was a bunch of guys grinding through whatever they were feeling, but I felt pretty good."

Despite feeling physically good, Frost, ever the personally accountable player, didn't shy away from speaking about the areas he felt could use some improvement, along with how he handles not getting as much ice time as he would like.

"I think I've grown up a lot and know how to handle those situations," he said. "Obviously it's never easy because you want to play every game, but there were times where I wasn't playing up to the standard I should've been and the standard that he was gonna hold me to and that I hold myself to. I understand it, it's part of it, so I'm just going to try to be more consistent so it doesn't happen.

"I've definitely gotten better, [but] there are still some times where I feel like I'm lacking a little bit, and I think that can kind of show up in my play sometimes," he said. "I think I can be more consistent with that and more consistent in my play in general. You're never gonna play good for all 82 games in a season...but I know what I want to focus on and work on and it'll be something I'm thinking of going into the offseason."
