The Philadelphia Flyers playoff hopes hang in the balance of winning their final game tomorrow and getting help from other NHL teams tonight.
According to Moneypuck.com, the Flyers' chances of sneaking into the postseason are 18% heading into tonight. However, Hockey-Reference.com says the Flyers have only a 3.5% chance of making the playoffs.
With one game remaining, how can the Flyers boost their chances tonight?
To put it simply, the Flyers need the Montreal Canadiens to beat the Detroit Red Wings, the New Jersey Devils to beat the New York Islanders, the Nashville Predators to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Boston Bruins to beat the Washington Capitals.
If those four results happen, especially in regulation, the Flyers' playoff chances will increase.
Of the four teams that need to lose tonight, the Islanders are the only ones who can clinch a playoff berth tonight.
"There are so many different scenarios, and we still have tonight's games to play," head coach John Tortorella told reporters after practice today. "People are going to fill me in on what's going on. I'm not going to be there on my phone. What happens, happens. I know how we're preparing for our game, so there's no sense of getting too locked into the other stuff. We need to take care of our stuff."
The Flyers' eight-game losing streak took whatever control of the playoffs they had and tossed it out of the window.
The tie-breaking scenarios are confusing, to say the least. After today's results, THN will release a forecast of tomorrow's matchup and how the results affect what can happen tomorrow.
