Being faced with a hefty amount of doubt in the beginning of the season certainly created an uphill battle for Foerster's first season, but he took the doubt all in stride.
"I think we had a lot of heart all year," he said. "Everybody counted us out, probably everyone said it, [but] we proved everyone wrong. Just couldn't get it done in the end. But I think we had a great year.
"I like how we all stuck together, even when we went through that eight-game stretch. I think we all stuck together, we knew we still had a chance, and I think we gave ourselves a chance at the end. You know, that's all we can ask for."
Foerster didn't start the season off being as productive as he would've liked, but was able to find the back of the net more as the season went on, something he attributed to just growing more comfortable at the NHL level.
"I think the puck just started going in the net for me," he said. "I feel like at the start of the year, I was getting a bunch of Grade A chances, I just wasn't able to score. I was still getting those chances in the second half, and I was just starting to score them, so I think it was just about actually scoring them and a couple lucky bounces here and there
"I feel like you've just gotta adapt. Obviously, in this league, everyone's an unbelievable player, and you've just gotta adapt and try to be the best player you can be."
A solid rookie year has given him a strong foundation to build on during the offseason, and a big part of developing his game is his continued belief in himself.
"I feel like I've always believed in myself," he said. "Even though this year started off pretty rough for me—not rough, but, you know, it's always nice and better when you start scoring. I just had to keep believing in myself and good things happened.
"Everyone knows how [head coach John Tortorella] wants us to play, and that's just how I thought my mindset should be is trying to just be defense first and try not to get scored against. If I'm not getting scored against then I'm doing a pretty good job."
