PITTSBURGH – The IIHF World Championship tournament is nearing an end, and only a pair of Pittsburgh Penguins will return with medals. Erik Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson represented their native Sweden and secured bronze medals.

Sweden secured their first medal in six years with a 4-2 win over defending champions Team Canada. Karlsson entered the tournament as Sweden’s captain and scored a tying goal in the bronze medal game.

Canada took a 2-1 lead in the early stages of the final frame when Karlsson let go a one-time slapshot that beat Jordan Binnington with just over 10 minutes remaining. Sweden scored two more times and locked up their third-place finish.

Karlsson finishes the tournament with six goals and five assists for 11 points. He and Andre Burakovsky tied for the second-most points on Team Sweden.

Pettersson wraps up the tournament with three goals and a pair of assists for five total points.

Karlsson and Pettersson will be the only two Penguins to finish the IIHF tournament with medals, as the gold medal game is between Switzerland and host country Czechia.

Michael Bunting represented Team Canada on the ice, while Kyle Dubas worked in their front office. Valtteri Puustinen and Jesse Puljujarvi played for their native Finland. Alex Nedeljkovic backstopped the United States for a pair of wins.
