While he still technically needs to make the team, it seems highly likely that 2023 first overall pick Connor Bedard will make his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The day before the 2023 NHL Draft, every team released their schedule for the upcoming season and the Penguins open their season at home against the Chicago Blackhawks on October 10, 2023.
If things go as planned and Bedard cracks the Blackhawks lineup right away, all eyes will be on Pittsburgh for a much awaited debut.
The Penguins made a tweet congratulating Bedard on being the first selection, but also predicting that he will be an NHLer for opening night.
Bedard says that he grew up idolizing Sidney Crosby and was lucky enough to skate with him in the summer of 2022.
Crosby was nice enough to talk with Bedard and make him feel comfortable.
Bedard says that he still has to make the Blackhawks roster first, but says that would be a perfect script for him to break into the NHL.
The opening game between the Penguins and Blackhawks is part of a triple-header to open the 2023-24 NHL season.
The Tampa Bay Lightning open the season playing host to the Nashville Predators before Bedard and the Blackhawks take on Crosby and the Penguins.
Closing out the NHL’s opening night is the Seattle Kraken traveling to the Vegas Golden Knights who will be raising their Stanley Cup Championship banner.
