The passing of Rodion Amirov touched everyone, but there was a closer connection for the Pittsburgh Penguins president and GM.
The hockey world was hit with an unbelievable tragedy when it was announced that Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Rodion Amirov passed away at the age of 21.
Amirov was diagnosed with a brain tumor in February of 2022.
While everyone in hockey is mourning the passing of Amirov, it comes with a small connection to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Before joining the Penguins as president of hockey operations and eventual general manager, Kyle Dubas was the general manager of the Maple Leafs and drafted Amirov 15th overall in 2020.
It was Dubas who initially announced Amirov’s diagnosis; the Penguins released a statement as an organization with a personal message from Dubas.
Dubas stated that Amirov’s positivity will stay with him forever and that he has great potential as a hockey player.
Amirov spent most of his time since being drafted in 2020 playing with Ufa Salavat Yulayev in the KHL.
