Penguins' Mikael Granlund Among Top Offseason Trade Targets

The Pittsburgh Penguins will need to find a way out from Mikael Granlund and his contract.

What was the best moment of the 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins season?

Acquiring Mikael Granlund was a colossal failure on the part of Ron Hextall and likely played a huge role in his firing as Pittsburgh Penguins general manager.

In 21 games with the Penguins, Granlund only scored one goal and four assists and that might be as high as those counters go.

According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, Granlund is among the top trade targets this offseason, and not in the most positive light.

Granlund is a notable trade target because if the Penguins plan on moving on from the Finnish forward, they will likely have to strap assets with him.

With two more seasons on his contact at $5 million against the cap, Granlund won’t be an easy salary to shed.

Hextall stated following the deadline that a number of teams were bidding on Granlund and he was a player the Penguins have been targeting for a while.

“He’s a guy that we tried to get a couple years ago,” Hextall said. “He was a coveted player.”

That shine likely word completely off of Granlund in his month with the Penguins as he failed to perform anywhere near his perceived abilities.

No matter what way you look at it, the Penguins need to be out from Granlund and his deal and sending him out with the first round pick might be the cleanest option.
