Dean Tait - Hockey Shots - Jacob Peterson Shouldn't Go Unclaimed

Jacob Peterson did not make the San Jose Sharks roster out of training camp after he was placed on waivers.

Peterson will be available to be claimed by the other 31 NHL teams for the next 24 hours. Given everything Peterson has shown from the end of last season through this preseason, don't be surprised if he gets claimed.

He had eight points in 11 games with the San Jose Sharks last season. He has also shown flexibility to play on the wing or at center. The 24-year-old has a $775K cap hit and will be an RFA at season's end. That low of a cap hit for a young player is enticing for any NHL franchise.

Sharks head coach David Quinn has been high on Peterson. With the log jam at many positions in training camp, Peterson needed to stand out.

"He's sneaky good. He's got a real good hockey sense," Quinn said at the beginning of camp. "He can make a play. There is a lot to like about him as a player. We've got a lot of competition for our forward positions. He's certainly a guy that I would feel very comfortable with being on this team."

Although it had to be a tough decision, the Sharks stuck with other options like Givani Smith, Fabian Zetterlund, and Thomas Bordeleau.

Peterson told THN at the beginning of training camp that he was starting to settle in.

"Getting into it more and more every day," Peterson said. "Outside [of hockey], too. I've been here for a while and know how it works. I know the rinks and stuff like that. So I think that helps and then just trying to improve every day in practice."

If unclaimed, he won't go far. The San Jose Barracuda practice and play at Tech CU Arena, connected to Sharks Ice San Jose.

Internal competition is what San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier and Quinn wanted to bring to training camp. That is precisely what they did, and although it got the best out of some players, it left some players on the chopping block, like Peterson.
