Last night, the San Jose Sharks secured a furious comeback, a 5-4 win against the New York Islanders, but it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.
Defenseman Calen Addison finished the game with 17:39 TOI. Usually, that seems like a lot, but in a game where they were trailing and scored two empty net goals, it was strange not to see his number be higher.
When the Sharks played the New York Rangers, they were in a similar scenario. Addison finished that game with 19:11 TOI.
Addison was not on the ice for either of the Sharks' goals, with their goalie Kaapo Kahkonen on the bench. He did not play the final 10:53 of the third period or any of overtime.
"He's going to be a very good player, but he's got to make sure that he understands consequences out there," Sharks coach David Quinn said postgame. "He's done a lot of good things for us, but tonight wasn't his night."
The Sharks were trailing 2-1 with just under 15 minutes in the third period, with a man advantage. Addison made a blind backhand pass to the vacant point, leading to the shorthanded goal.
Addison's offensive game has been growing since coming to San Jose, but he made too many mistakes against the Islanders last night.
After giving up the shorthanded goal, he had one more shift. Quinn had enough of the mistakes and sat the young defenseman down.
Quinn sent six forwards on the ice when the Sharks pulled their goalie. Mikael Granlund was on the point with Addison glued to the bench.
As coach Quinn said, Addison will be a very good player for his team, but a message needs to be sent when a team is trying to limit turnovers.
