The San Jose Sharks have announced they have relieved head coach David Quinn and head athletic trainer Ray Tufts of their duties.
"After going through our end of the season process of internal meetings and evaluating where our team is at and where we want our group to go, we have made the difficult decision to make a change at the head coach position," GM Mike Grier said in a release. "David is a good coach and an even better person. I would like to personally thank him for his hard work over these past two seasons. He and his staff did an admirable job under some difficult circumstances, and I sincerely appreciate how they handled the situation."
During his exit interview, Grier was non-committal to Quinn retaining his Sharks' head coach position.
Quinn, who had one year left on his contract, was the head coach for 164 games and had a record of 41-98-25.
The team also announced they've let Ray Tufts go as the head athletic trainer.
"Ray spent more than two decades overseeing the care and well-being of our players," Grier said. "We thank him for his service to the organization and our players and wish him and his family the best in the future."
San Jose dealt with injuries to multiple key players, including Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, and Ty Emberson, all season long. San Jose finished second in the NHL in man-games lost due to injury with 459.
The coaching search now begins again for San Jose.
