The San Jose Sharks have announced the signing of defense prospect Luca Cagnoni to an entry-level contract.
Cagnoni had a record-setting year for a defenseman in the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks. The 2023 4th-round pick had 90 points (18 goals, 72 assists) in 65 games played.
"Luca is an intelligent two-way defenseman with a strong playmaking skillset," Sharks GM Mike Grier said in a statement. "He had an impressive season individually for the Winterhawks, showcasing his ability to make plays on the offensive side of the puck while also being an effective player in his own zone. We are happy to have him a part of the organization."
Per source, Cagnoni has signed a three-year contract with a starting salary of $775K for the 2024-25 season. If he starts in the AHL, his salary will be $82,500. During the 25-26 season, Cagnoni's salary will be $800K, and for 26-27, $825K.
The defenseman will join the Sharks organization this Summer and likely begin his professional career. He has worked hard to develop the defensive side of his game, which was his biggest concern coming out of the 2023 NHL Draft.
