The San Jose Sharks have traded 2020 first-round pick Ozzy Wiesblatt to the Nashville Predators for Egor Afanasyev.
Wiesblatt spent the end of the AHL season and Calder Cup Playoffs with the Predators minor league team, the Milwaukee Admirals, on loan. He had two goals and nine assists in 15 postseason games.
The 22-year-old was happy to get more opportunities with the Admirals after leaving the San Jose Barracuda without a solidified spot in the lineup.
The writing was on the wall for Wiesblatt and the Sharks. Loaning a player is rare; not even Wiesblatt knew that was possible, but that opened the door for the Admirals to get a look at a player they were likely interested in acquiring.
In return, the Sharks have received 2019 2nd-round pick Egor Afanasyev. Afanasyev was the Admirals leading scorer with 54 points (27 goals, 27 assists). He has played 19 career NHL games with the Predators and scored one goal. He played two games in 2023-24 but didn't register a point.
The Russian forward adds size to the Sharks' lineup. At 6'4, 211 lbs, the Sharks' prospect pool got a lot bigger. While there is no way of knowing if he will start next season in the NHL or AHL, Afanasyev certainly brings the tools that San Jose needs.
Afanasyev is a pending RFA and must be qualified and/or signed for the Sharks to retain his rights.
