Dean Tait - Hockey Shots - David Quinn Doesn't Hide From Sharks Reality

San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn didn't hide from the state of the Sharks after last night's 9-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

The bench boss put the Sharks roster in perspective during his postgame press conference.

"We all know where we're at as an organization," Quinn said. "When we got here two years ago, everybody knew we were going to have to get worse before we got better. That's just the reality."

The coach is right. With GM Mike Grier's moves, the Sharks went from a team with multiple long-term contracts and players over 30 to one of the youngest teams in the league with significant draft capital.

San Jose has locked in the best odds for the No. 1 pick at this season's draft lottery. The NHL Central Scouting released its final report on prospects, and once again, Macklin Celebrini was the unquestioned top-ranked prospect.

"We're in the middle of something that is going well despite the results we're getting right now. I've said this repeatedly: We're in a much better position to get better quicker than we were two years ago," Quinn said. "Just look at all the players that we've traded and got rid of over the last two years so we can get better and be consistently good [and] competing for Stanley Cups. Unfortunately, this is what you have to suffer through."

With just 19 wins this season, San Jose will finish last in that category for the second straight season. The Sharks finished with 22 wins last season.

Quinn kept it real during his media availability but continued to prove why there is hope for the future.

"I wish I could give you a different one, but that is the answer. I don't think there's a lot of subjectivity to that," he finished.

While the official date of the NHL Draft Lottery hasn't been reported, it is expected to occur either May 6th or 7th.
