During game two of the Stanley Cup Final broadcast on ESPN, play-by-play announcer Sean McDonough said projected San Jose Sharks first pick Macklin Celebrini was disappointed not to play for David Quinn.
Celebrini and other top 2024 NHL Draft prospects are in Sunrise, Florida, taking in game two of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. McDonough said he spoke to Celebrini.
The Draft Lottery results were announced on May 7th, but David Quinn was fired on April 24th. Quinn was the head coach at Boston University before earning his first NHL head coaching job with the New York Rangers in 2018.
Celebrini currently attends BU, which happens to be GM Mike Grier's alma mater. Celebrini has repeatedly said that he hasn't decided to return to the NCAA or turn pro.
Just after McDonough discussed Celebrini's supposed disappointment, his partner, Ray Ferraro, preached patience regarding the Sharks coaching search.
"Of the things that need to be rushed, that is not it," Ferraro said about the Sharks coaching search. "They need to get their draft organized. It's not just Celebrini. It is who comes after it. They have a long road to go in San Jose. The draft becomes a pretty critical thing. The coach, that will come."
The Sharks are the only team in the NHL without a head coach.
