During his exit interview, San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier told reporters that he is still evaluating everything regarding a possible coaching change.
Grier was honest when assessing the season and said it was worse than expected. With multiple 10+ game losing streaks this season, questions have been asked about head coach David Quinn's job security.
When asked if it was safe to say that Quinn and his staff would return, his answer wasn't a complete backing of the bench boss.
"I think there's still evaluation. That's all part of my job is to get as much information as I can from the players through exit meetings and staff," Grier said. "The hockey office staff will talk once we get all the information in and talk with Hasso as well then we'll go from there."
While Quinn is the main focus, questions about the team's AHL affiliate head coach job, John McCarthy, could be on the line too.
When reporters pressed Grier to confirm if Quinn would be back, he once again didn't completely support his head coach.
"Like I said, I'm still getting all the information I can, and we'll go from there," he said.
Grier is not saying he is making a coaching change. Quinn was dealt a terrible hand with injuries this season. The Sharks could not get their top four centers in the lineup for a single game.
Quinn recognized that Grier needed to do his due diligence regarding a decision. He then self-evaluated his season behind the bench.
"Well, it was hard to do with winning and losing because if you did that, I wouldn't be standing here," Quinn said. "It was really morale—managing morale when you're in the situation we're in. I mean, you got to coach a team. You got to coach the situation you have, and it was morale-driven. "In the meetings we've had and whatnot, the guys felt good about coming here every day, regardless of the circumstances. That was our that was our job."
He also said he wonders what the team's record would've been like should they have had at least three centers for an extended period this season.
Again, Grier and the front office have not made any decisions, but it is certainly interesting what Grier said about possible coaching changes at the NHL and AHL levels.
