With Ryan Warsofsky officially hired as the team's 11th head coach in franchise history, the San Jose Sharks must round out the rest of the coaching staff.
While other coaches like Brian Wiseman, Thomas Speer, and Nick Gialdini are not officially let go, they aren't shoe-ins to be part of Warosfsky's staff.
Reports have suggested that the team wants to keep Wiseman. Mike Grier and Warsofsky didn't confirm that he would return.
"Mike and I will go through that process," Warsofsky said. "I think in the coming days and weeks, we'll finalize the staff, but we really just started that process."
Under David Quinn, San Jose had two assistant coaches, not including Speer. Warsofsky says he plans to have three assistants on the bench with him.
"I think he'd be a priority to bring back," Warsofsky said about Speer. "I like Speersy. He does a really good job with our goaltenders. I've talked to Mackenzie Blackwood already; he likes him. He did a great job when Kaapo Kahkonen was here."
Of the coaches on the staff last season, only Wiseman was considered an assistant. Gialdini was the team's video coach. Given that Warsofsky wants to have three assistants, the Sharks would need to bring in at least two more coaches, and that is if Wiseman remains in his role.
Like Wiseman, the Sharks could promote from within, but based on what Grier and Warsofsky said today, figuring out who else will be on the bench hasn't started yet.
