Although the Colorado Avalanche were the eventual winners in the sweepstakes for former San Jose Sharks goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, Friedman reported on a written 32 Thoughts that the Carolina Hurricanes were "serious" in acquiring the netminder.

"Carolina was very serious about MacKenzie Blackwood before he went from San Jose to Colorado," Friedman wrote.

The Hurricanes have been looking for goaltending help since Frederik Andersen suffered a knee injury that required surgery. Andersen has only played four games this season, the last of which was on Oct. 26.

Pyotr Kochetkov has filled in nicely for the Hurricanes but is 25 years old and in his second full season in the NHL. Friedman suggests that Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson is another trade target for the Canes with Blackwood off the market.
