Last night, San Jose Sharks goalie prospects Magnus Chrona and Georgi Romanov showcased what they could bring to the NHL in the future.
Chrona's game opened eyeballs for what his skill could bring to the team. After getting shelled in his first two appearances in the NHL, Chrona nearly played hero in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars. He stopped 36 of 38 shots and only allowed two goals in the shootout against one of the best offensive teams.
"I love to shootouts," Chrona said postgame. "I was just smiling the entire time and wanted a chance to win. I was just happy while the shootout was going on."
He had to stop high-flying rookie Logan Stankoven on a breakaway late in overtime to give his team a chance to get to the skills competition.
Chrona stopped all 12 shots he faced in the first period, including a save where he reached back and swept the puck off the goal line.
"The puck went wobbling over my head, and I tried to turtle play it and lay on my back and see where it was," Chrona explained. "It ended up in my favor."
But the Sharks' incredible goaltending didn't stop in the NHL. Georgi Romanov stopped 48 of 50 shots in the San Jose Barracuda's 3-2 shootout loss to the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
Romanov has faced 89 shots in his last two games and has allowed just six goals. That gives him a .932 save % over two games.
Romanov is 24, and Chrona is 23, so there will be growing pains, but last night, they showcased why GM Mike Grier brought them into the organization. Romanov has begun to look more comfortable on a North American-sized ice rink, and Chrona earned redemption in the NHL.
