San Jose Sharks winger Alexander Barabanov picked up a lower-body injury against the Anaheim Ducks and won't play tonight or tomorrow.
Barabanov will be an unrestricted free agent after this season and has had rumors about a trade following him throughout the year. He has had a tough season offensively, with three goals and seven assists in 37 games.
"He's had some good moments. It looks like he's trying to force offense," Sharks head coach David Quinn said about Barabanov's play since he was scratched."It's been a hard year for him with his injuries [and] his free agency year. I think he's chasing a little bit of offense too much. I thought there was an uptick in his play in the last two games."
Barabanov was a healthy scratch against the Vegas Golden Knights. He made a crucial blunder on a backcheck against the Columbus Blue Jackets, which led to Boone Jenner's game-winning goal with 12.9 seconds left.
The Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, and Colorado Avalanche are reportedly interested in trading for the Russian forward.
Barabanov had 47 points in 68 games a season ago but hasn't found his offensive rhythm this time. He dealt with a broken finger and COVID this season already before adding this new lower-body injury.
He has one assist in his last five games and has been playing on the Sharks' third line with Nico Sturm and Kevin Labanc.
