With the acquisitions of Jones, Martin and Ward, San Jose just might have re-found its way
IT’S FUNNY HOW QUICKLY THINGS CAN change. Not long ago, the state of California was considered the NHL’s Death Valley, the road swing you began to dread as soon as you took a peek at the schedule. For a while, it looked as though the Stanley Cup might not apply for permanent residence there, but it was about to accept a job at In-N-Out and take out earthquake insurance.
Then came the 2014-15 season. Two of the three teams didn’t make the playoffs and the Anaheim Ducks couldn’t close out a crucial series or win a Game 7 on home ice. All of a sudden, Cali didn’t look quite so imposing.

Celebrini continues to get overlooked in comparison to fellow teen sensation Bedard. But if you look at the underlying numbers and total package, it’s a close race
IT WAS ABOUT A year ago in this space that I made the argument the hockey world was undervaluing Macklin Celebrini. The consensus No. 1 prospect in the 2024 NHL draft was coming off an incredible freshman season at Boston University, one which saw him become the youngest winner of the Hobey Baker Award while leading the Terriers with 64 points in 38 games as a 17-year-old. For context, that’s roughly the same production Jack Eichel had with Boston U in his draft year, and Eichel was about eight months older than Celebrini.
Because of the long shadow of Connor Bedard, who had gone first overall to the Chicago Blackhawks the year prior, Celebrini wasn’t as highly touted. We all knew Bedard from his incredible WHL career in Regina and his heroics at the World Junior Championship for Canada, but it just felt a little disrespectful toward Celebrini.

Celebrini scored a hat trick and collected five points last night. His first goal came in the first period, just six minutes in when he scored on the power play to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead.

From THN's Archive: Farm Life Suits Falloon Just Fine
First-ever Shark pick went to Stanley Cup with Philadelphia
In Foxwarren, Man., there is farming and there is hockey. Pat Falloon was born and raised there, and with his playing career finished, the No. 2 overall draft pick in 1991 is back where he started. But there were some interesting stops in between.
Playing junior in a hockey-mad city helped Falloon prepare for the NHL spotlight. Falloon was a living legend in Spokane, leading the Western League’s Chiefs to a Memorial Cup title in his final season and being crowned MVP.

The Hockey News has released its archive to all THN subscribers: 76 years of history, stories, and features.
ON OCT. 5, 1991, I was at the Cow Palace (called the California State Livestock Pavilion from 1941-1944) in Daly City, Calif., attending the first-ever home game of the San Jose Sharks. I had moved to San Jose in 1988 after a tip I had received from Brian O’Neill, the then vice-president of the NHL when its headquarters were based in Montreal and the president was John Ziegler.
While I was a student at Concordia University in the 1980s, I opened an ice cream and dessert parlor called Casablanca on Lucerne Road in the Town of Mount Royal. One of my employees was Sandy O’Neill, daughter of Brian, and Brian would occasionally drop by to pick up his energetic and charismatic daughter.

The unconventional Irbe always marched to his own beat. That included his famously frayed goalie gear as well as listening to ‘trendy’ tunes
THOSE CALIFORNIANS sure played weird tunes on the radio, Arturs Irbe thought. He was riding the bus as a newcomer on the expansion San Jose Sharks during the 1991-92 season, listening to what he assumed was cutting edge American music. In reality, though, it was just the team bus driver’s preferred genre: oldies.
Irbe went an entire year before he found out oldies weren’t modern pop hits. And it’s fitting, isn’t it? The guy spent his career jiving to his own throwback beat. He was a short, stocky goaltender who never changed his equipment and regularly repaired his tattered pads himself. His puckhandling was unorthodox at best and ineffective at worst. And he made his living constantly surprising everyone as one of the sport’s most fascinating underdog stories.
