Elliotte Friedman wrote a note for every team ahead of Friday's trade deadline and said that the San Jose Sharks have been open for business for a while.
"The Sharks have been open for business for a while. It had been quiet around them, but they are trying to move as many of their seven UFAs," Friedman writes.
Mike Hoffman, Kevin Labanc, Anthony Duclair, Alexander Barabanov, and Kaapo Kahkonen are the five main UFAs rumored to be on the block.
The interesting part that he reports is that the Sharks are trying to move all seven pending free agents, which could mean that the Sharks are also trying to move Ryan Carpenter and Justin Bailey.
Neither player has come up in rumors anywhere, but both could be excellent depth adds for a contending team.
Carpenter can bring his experience and solid defensive play to a fourth-line center position for almost every team fighting for a playoff spot. Carpenter has filled in at the NHL level all season due to injuries and morphed into a solid bottom-line center for head coach David Quinn.
Justin Bailey is an interesting case as he was brought into San Jose on a PTO and has made his way to the NHL.
Bailey and Carpenter have small cap hits of 775K, so fitting them on a team won't be hard. Bailey's speed is among the tops in the league. His top skating speed this season is 23.53 mph, which ranks in the 96th percentile according to NHL EDGE.
He has 20 speed bursts over 22 mph, which ranks in the 98th percentile.
Friedman summarizes his quick note by saying that teams have been calling about Mario Ferraro and Mikael Granlund, but GM Mike Grier won't trade either player unless a higher price is met.
Trade talks for every team will ramp up like crazy this week, but the Sharks will move on from many pieces based on reports.
