The Toronto Maple Leafs suffocated the San Jose Sharks all night, as William Nylander scored twice, handing them their 11th straight loss with a 4-1 win.
Mitch Marner and Calle Jarnkrok scored the other goals for the Maple Leafs. Martin Jones returned to San Jose and made 23 saves.
Mikael Granlund scored his 5th goal of the season. Mackenzie Blackwood was excellent again, making 31 saves.
"I didn't really love our compete tonight," Sharks coach David Quinn said. "I thought we were outworked and competed too often tonight. [It] picked up [and got] better through stretches."
San Jose held its own defensively but couldn't generate much offense. They have lost 11 games in a row for the second time this season.
"It's not easy, but at the end of the day, we can't really have that in the back of our mind," Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro said. "[We can't go onto the] road trip thinking about that. Like I said before, it's about the little things and each shift at a time. We can't just think oh, we gotta get this win and kill the streak. We got to think we have to have a good shift and make it lean into another good shift, and that'll be a good period and then a good second and a good third, and then we get the win."
With the Sharks down two men, Mitch Marner scores his 15th goal of the season with a one-timer.
San Jose had a solid first two minutes of the period, but the Maple Leafs quickly turned it around. Toronto outshot San Jose 18-3 in the first.
Callie Jarnkrok gets one through Blackwood with 42.2 left in the second period. It was his 10th goal this season. Toronto is putting on a clinic, outshooting the Sharks 26-8.
The Sharks were outshot 9-7 in the period but had a tough time generating sustained offense.
William Nylander picks a corner on Blackwood for his 20th goal of the season. 3-0 Leafs.
Mikael Granlund deposits one into the back of the net off a great feed from Fabian Zetterlund.
"He's grown a lot. He's a really good player," Mikael Granlund said about Zettelrund. "He's becoming a really good power forward in this league. He's a strong dude. He works hard. He plays honest hockey. I've enjoyed playing with him."
Nylander scores again for his 21st of the season. 4-1 Leafs.
