There was a lot of drama when the San Jose Sharks claimed Barclay Goodrow off waivers. 

Goodrow faced the media for the first time since he was re-acquired this summer. The newly minted alternate captain didn't want to get into what happened with the New York Rangers. 

"I think whatever happened in the summer will stay in the summer. I have a lot of different opinions on what happened, but I'll choose to keep those to myself," Goodrow said. "I'm excited to be here and excited to get camp started."

Reports emerged that Goodrow was frustrated with how the situation was handled. The report suggested that he felt he was not given the respect he deserved, given his status as a Stanley Cup-winning veteran. 

"I think it was kind of more blown up in the media than what was actually going on," Goodrow said. "I think just because I didn't talk to you guys didn't necessarily mean I needed to get over something. I was enjoying my summer."

Through two days of training camp, Goodrow has skated on a line with top Sharks prospect Will Smith and last year's leading goalscorer Fabian Zetterlund.

Head coach Ryan Warsofsky approached the 31-year-old over the summer, something Goodrow greatly appreciated. 

"Warsofsky came down in the summer. You appreciate that the coach wants to have a relationship with his players, and I'm excited to play for him," Goodrow said. "You can sense the excitement coming into camp this year. [There are] lots of young guys, lots of really skilled players, and I think we're excited to see what they can do."

Goodrow mentioned that Smith asked him about the 2019 game seven against the Vegas Golden Knights. Goodrow told Smith that it was the loudest building he'd ever experienced. 

Goodrow says he feels wanted in San Jose, which showed as he immediately earned a letter on his jersey. He was also a captain with the Rangers. 

"It's good to be in a spot where you're wanted," Goodrow said. "I've been a leader the last few years in New York. It's another exciting chapter to come here, to be counted on, to be a leader. Be a player that other guys and younger guys can come to."

With Logan Couture out for what looks to be a long-term injury, Goodrow and the rest of the leadership group will be heavily leaned on.
