San Jose Sharks goalie Devin Cooley is reliving his childhood. He currently lives with his dad at the house where he grew up.
Cooley, a San Jose native and San Jose Jr. Sharks alumni, was acquired from the Buffalo Sabres in a trade deadline move. He has become Mackenzie Blackwood's backup goalie.
Cooley's story is well documented, and after being with the Sharks for just under a month, Cooley says he feels more settled in.
"Any game that you play in the NHL is a blessing," Cooley told THN today. "I'm super excited to get back in there and then use everything that I've been learning these last couple of weeks."
Cooley has played two games in the NHL, both against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Sharks had a lead in the third period in both of his starts but lost. Cooley's second game had the Blackhawks erase a 4-0 deficit to win the game in overtime.
Despite the losses, the netminder has kept a positive attitude and a willingness to learn the NHL.
In terms of how he's settling in, Cooley says that he currently lives with his dad in the same house he grew up in.
"I'm living with my dad, the same [in the] same house I grew up in. [I'm] doing the same drive that I did growing up coming to the rink," Cooley smiled. "I'm definitely settling in, being like a backup during the games and traveling around. I'm starting to get used to it and I'm starting to feel a lot more comfortable."
New York Giants Quarterback Tommy DeVito was living with his parents during the 2023 NFL season and said living with his family made his life much easier.
THN informed Cooley of this and he couldn't agree more with what DeVito said.
"It's been awesome," Cooley said about his father.
His family has been able to attend both of his games and have worn his old Jr. Sharks uniforms.
"'I'm a huge pizza guy. Pizza My Heart and Roundtable are like my go to spots," Cooley said about places he's happy to go back in San Jose. "It's just nice to be at my home, at the house I grew up in, and just be able to chill."
Cooley said he isn't sure when his next game will be and Sharks head coach David Quinn said that Blackwood will start Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks have back-to-back games during the weekend, giving Cooley a good chance to start then.
