Neville E. Guard-USA TODAY Sports - This Day In Sharks History: Joe Thornton Has First Hat Trick In Eight Seasons

On February 18th, 2019, Joe Thornton scored his first hat trick in eight seasons when the San Jose Sharks took on the Boston Bruins.

Thornton hadn't scored a hat trick since October 27th, 2010. The Sharks started on the back foot, going down 3-0 in the first period. Boston got goals from Torey Krug, Zdeno Chara, and Karson Kuhlman.

San Jose clawed their way back, time and time again. Logan Couture earned himself a shorthanded penalty shot with 25 seconds remaining in the third period with a chance to tie the game at four.

At 13:32 of the third period, Thornton fired a shot under the defenseman's leg in front of him, causing the puck to skip off the ice and over Tuukka Rask's glove.

This game didn't end favorably for the Sharks, as they fell 6-5 in overtime. Chris Wagner tied the game at five with 1:49 left in the third period. He clearly touched the puck with a high stick, but it went uncalled.

At the time, a challenge for a missed stoppage in play wasn't in effect so that the Sharks couldn't challenge the play. The Bruins' Charlie McAvoy won the game in overtime after Tuukka Rask stopped the Sharks from getting a breakaway because he didn't put the net back on its moorings.

Despite the result, Sharks fans vividly remember this game and Thornton's third goal.
