The Lightning are interested in bringing back one of their former defensemen.
Back during the 2020-21 season, the Tampa Bay Lightning notably acquired defenseman David Savard. He proved to be a key part of their Stanley Cup run, as he provided steady defensive play, physicality, and some offense along with it.
Now, fast forward to 2023-24, Savard is a member of the Montreal Canadiens and is generating plenty of interest around the league. Without much surprise, the Lightning, a team that needs help on the blue line, are interested in him, according to The Fourth Period.
There's no question that the Lightning could use a player like Savard right now. Their right side is not particularly strong, and adding a player like him would give their top four a notable boost. With that, he would be an obvious option for their penalty kill because of his strong defensive play.
Yet, what's important to note is that Savard is under contract until the end of next season. Thus, he would be more than just a rental if acquired. Therefore, the Lightning would need to get creative to fit him and his $3.5 million cap hit on their roster. Perhaps Montreal could be open to retaining a chunk of it if it results in them landing a bigger return.
In 37 games this season with the Habs, Savard has four goals, 13 points, 46 hits, and 103 blocks.
