The Lightning are being connected to another notable defenseman.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have been connected to several defensemen on the trade market over the last several weeks. It is easy to see why, as Mikhail Sergachev is out indefinitely, and he's a vital part of their group. Some specific players whom they have been linked to include Noah Hanifin (Calgary Flames), Chris Tanev (Flames), Sean Walker (Philadelphia Flyers), and Matt Dumba (Arizona Coyotes).
However, it now appears that the Lightning have a new defenseman on their radar. According to The Fourth Period, the Lightning "are among the teams believed to have interest" in Columbus Blue Jackets star defenseman Ivan Provorov.
Provorov, 27, has been picking up some steam in the rumor mill as we get closer to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. It is understandable, as the Blue Jackets are having another disappointing season. As a result, a shakeup may be needed, and Provorov is easily one of their top trading assets.
If the Lightning acquired Provorov, he would be a nice fit on their second pairing. However, he also could work on their top pairing with Victor Hedman if utilized on the right side. Along with that, he would be an option on both their special-team units due to his all-around solid play.
If the Lightning acquired Provorov, he would be more than a rental, as he is under contract until the end of next season.
In 57 games this season with the Blue Jackets, Provorov has five goals, 26 points, and a minus-12 rating.
