This notable Lightning defenseman did not participate in morning skate.

Victor Hedman speaks with media following 7-0 shutout win against the Flyers

The Tampa Bay Lightning are preparing for a big matchup tonight against the New York Islanders. The Bolts are looking to secure a victory, as it would make them just one point behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for third in the Atlantic Division.

However, today's morning skate caused some genuine concern, as defenseman Erik Cernak was not on the ice. This came after Cernak missed practice earlier this week for maintenance.

Given Cernak's absence from morning skate, it is likely that we won't see the right-shot defenseman play against the Islanders. This is far from ideal news, as Cernak's physicality and steady defensive play make him an essential part of the Lightning's lineup.

In 60 games this season with the Lightning, Cernak has one goal, 10 assists, 158 hits, and an even plus/minus rating.

Editor's Note: The reason for Cernak's absence has been announced. The hard-hitting defenseman missed a team meeting and is a healthy scratch for the club's contest against the Islanders because of it.
