The Tampa Bay Lightning have a big decision to make with captain Steven Stamkos. The star forward is on an expiring contract, and GM Julien BriseBois has established that he will wait to begin contract talks with Stamkos until after the season.
If the Lightning and Stamkos do not reach a new deal, the future Hall of Famer will be one of the hottest commodities on the free-agent market. This is because he is still a star at this juncture of his career, as his 31 goals and 67 points in 74 games this season effectively showcase.

As a result, Stamkos was ranked No. 5 on Lyle Richardson's latest NHL Free-Agency Big Board for the Bleacher Report. The only players ahead of him were Sam Reinhart, Jake Guentzel, Noah Hanifin, and Elias Lindholm. Given that they are each stars in their prime years, this is understandable.
Given his importance to the Lightning and their overall franchise history, the Bolts would be wise to bring him back. He is still a key part of their top six, and he has made it known that he wishes to continue his career there beyond this season.
However, if Stamkos does indeed hit the market, there will be a line out the door for his services. Some early potential suitors could include the Nashville Predators, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers.
