Dubas and Bunting spent time in the OHL with the Soo Greyhounds before reuniting in the Maple Leafs organization.
Kyle Dubas and Michael Bunting have reunited, but not in the blue and white.
The former Maple Leafs GM, who's now the president and GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is acquiring Bunting from the Carolina Hurricanes, with Jake Guentzel being the primary player headed the other way, according to TSN and The Athletic insider Pierre LeBrun.
Guentzel joins a playoff team in the Hurricanes, who sit second in the Metropolitan Division with 78 points. The 29-year-old forward has 22 goals and 30 assists for 52 points in 50 games this season with Pittsburgh.
Bunting, who signed a three-year, $13.5 million deal with Carolina on July 1, isn't producing as much as he did last season with the Maple Leafs. The 28-year-old forward has 13 goals and 23 assists through 60 games this season.
Dubas signed Bunting to a two-year, $1.9 million deal on July 28, 2021, while GM of the Maple Leafs. The pair go way back, as they spent time together in the Soo Greyhounds organization during the 2013-14 season, where Dubas was the general manager and Bunting was an OHL rookie.
The forward had 46 goals and 66 assists in 161 regular season games with the Maple Leafs. In 13 playoff games with Toronto, Bunting scored two goals and three assists.
