    Happy Sunday, Utah Mammoth fans.

We are now a week into the 2025-26 regular season and for the Mammoth, their stars have come to play, especially Dylan Guenther. They are 1-1-0 to the start the year, but have played well. They played the first instalment of the Ice Age series against the Nashville Predators, which is going to be one of Mammoth fans most liked rivalries.

Now that the first week of the season is wrapped up, it's a good time to look back at the week that was at the Hockey News' Mammoth site.

Dylan Guenther is as clutch as ever for Utah Mammoth. Playing in overtime against the Predators, Utah was in full control after securing the puck early. Though Utah was managing to keep the puck away from Nashville, the Mammoth was still looking for an opening in the Predators’ defense. Suddenly, after a near turnover, Guenther got that opportunity and delivered big time.

The Utah Mammoth's 2025-26 season continues tonight with a battle that just about every NHL fan was hoping for. In a matchup that I'm personally calling the Battle of Age Ice Characters. If you haven't guessed yet, they are taking on the Nashville Predators, which means, they are just Sid the Sloth short of the three main characters from the movie Ice Age. The Mammoth are planning on going with the same 11-7 lineup format that they used last game. That should chance when Alex Kerfoot and Barrett Hayton return to the lineup. Puck drop is set for 6:00 pm MDT/8:00 pm EST at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

WHILE JULY 1 IS always a holiday north of the border, it has become a dual celebration over the past two decades or so thanks to NHL free agency, which happens to fall on Canada Day. It’s a whirlwind of activity if you happen to work in the industry, but when the dust settled on that first day of action, it became quite apparent that the ground really hadn’t shifted that much around the NHL landscape. There was definitely a feeling of “Did anything really happen today?” Sure, there were signings, but a lot of them were re-signings, with teams choosing to extend the talent they already knew instead of venturing out into the unknown. There was a blockbuster trade in the lead-up to July 1, when the Toronto Maple Leafs sent Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade – but that was all done before free agency officially opened.

It can showcase promising young prospects, like Utah's Dmitriy Simashev, develop essential team chemistry and even give a glimpse at the strengths and weaknesses the team will experience in the upcoming season. But there’s nothing that beats real game experience, and Utah Mammoth will certainly have things to workshop after a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Facing a contender and playoff regular like the Avalanche always figures to be a challenge. But for Utah, now having playoff aspirations of its own, it’s important to be able to compete with well-established playoff teams.

The Utah Mammoth kick off their 2025-26 season tonight in their first game against the Colorado Avalanche. Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm MDT at Ball Arena in Colorado. The Mammoth's projected lineup shows them going with a 11 forward - seven defensemen set up. This could be risky against an offensive powerhouse like the Avalanche. But with the emergence of Dmitri Simashev, it gives them seven NHL-ready defenders who can step into the lineup on any night and make an impact. So, it does make sense that sometimes they elect to go with the 11 and seven set up instead.
