A look at the Canucks shooting and goal-scoring trends using NHL EDGE 65 games into the 2023-24 season.
The Vancouver Canucks have continued on their historic pace into the 65-game mark. With 41 wins on the season, they are projected to finish the 2023-24 campaign with the second most points in franchise history. Here is a look at their shooting and goal-scoring trends through 65 games using the NHL's newest tool, NHL EDGE.
While the Canucks average goals per game have started to even out as the season has progressed, they are still one of the best in the league at capitalizing on their opportunities. They still lead the league in shooting percentage at 12.4% and are still the only team above 12%. One of the NHL's top-scoring teams, they have shown lately that they can win not just high-scoring games but grind out victories against potential playoff opponents.
Regarding shots, it is clear Vancouver is focusing heavily on high-danger chances. While they are in the 75th percentile for high-danger shots (546), they are below 50th in mid-range (481) and long-range (381) shots. Even though this strategy has worked this season, these high-danger opportunities will not come as frequently come playoff time, meaning the Canucks will need to start leaning a little more on mid-range and low-danger shots.
As for goals, some surprising data has emerged. While it is no surprise that they sit in the 75th percentile in high-danger goals with 131, they are in the 79th percentile for low-danger goals with 15. Finally, they sit below 50th in mid-range shots with 51, which aligns with where they are ranked in mid-range shots. Just like with shots, Vancouver will need to find a way to increase their mid-range scoring in the postseason if they want to go on a long playoff run.
Lastly, the Canucks shooting percentage numbers follow the trends of their goal-scoring. They rank in the 99th percentile for high-danger (24.0%) and 90th in the long-range category (3.9%). Their only problem category is mid-range, which, once again, ranks below 50th at 10.6%. Overall, these numbers are encouraging and show just how dangerous Vancouver can be from different areas of the ice.
Overall, the NHL EDGE number shows just how consistent the Canucks have been all season. While some areas need to improve, they continually show why they are a threat to score whenever in the offensive zone. With 17 games to go, the team has plenty of time to improve their game ahead of the postseason.
