For the first time in franchise history, the Vancouver Canucks (50-22-9) have been crowned champions of the Pacific Division. The Canucks were able to secure the division crown thanks to a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames (37-39-5). Tyler Myers, Nils Höglander, Dakota Joshua and J.T. Miller provided the offence, while Thatcher Demko stopped 39 of 40 shots in his return to action after missing the last month with a knee injury.
On top of capturing the division title, the Canucks secured their third 50-win season in franchise history. It has been a remarkable season, especially considering where the team was a year ago. Overall, their game against the Flames was another in a long list of impressive victories as they sent the Rogers Arena crowd home happy for the final time in the regular season.
Quotes
J.T. Miller on being named Canucks MVP by the fans:
"It's cool. I would say a year or two ago, it wasn't exactly that way. That's not the reason that we played, but at the same time, it's very nice to have. It's a special thing to be recognized by the fans that way and such a passionate fan base, and I can relate to that. So it means a lot."
Thatcher Demko on the challenges of returning from injury:
"There's a plethora of stuff. But you know, it's nice, we get up to three nothing lead, I can kind of focus in on the things that I want to focus on. Just kind of get into a rhythm there and feel pretty good about my game."
Rick Tocchet on the Canucks forward lines:
"Yeah, I mean, it's hard to evaluate this game. I didn't think we played our best winning the games is the most important. We'll get there the lines and figure it out, but yeah, I do like the depth part."
Rick Tocchet on the Canucks playing as a group:
"The crest means a lot to me. We always talked about the emblem on the front more than on the back. I think a lot of guys have bought into that. You know, we try not to preach individuals around here. It's good for guys to get accolades and other points. Some guys get 40 goals, that's all great, don't get me wrong, but it's all about the crests, and that's what wins in the playoffs. I think that's what I'm most proud of. The guys really find it this year and then you got young guys that we've drafted. You got the young guys like Höglander and stuff; they're feeding off the culture, the crest, and it just permeates at each level. That's the way I think you build organizations."
