Both Team Canada and Team Sweden lost on the final day of the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase.
Two Vancouver Canucks prospects were in action on the final day of the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase, with Sawyer Mynio competing for Canada and Melvin Fernström representing Sweden. Unfortunately, neither was able to walk away with a win, as Canada lost to the USA while Sweden fell to Finland. In the end, all three Canucks prospects, which included Anthony Romani, who was scratched for Team Canada, made an impact on the tournament, which is being used to scout players for the 2025 World Junior Hockey Championship.
Starting with Mynio, he and Team Canada fell 5-4 in a shootout to the USA. Mynio was once again partnered with Calgary Flames prospect Zayne Parekh, making up Canada's third pair. Mynio did not record any points against the USA but did take a penalty midway through the third period.
Fernström was also held pointless in Sweden's loss to Finland. Fernström skated on Sweden's fourth line, seeing time beside Jack Berglund and Linus Eriksson. Despite having a 3-1 lead heading into the third, Sweden was unable to hold on against their long-time rivals, falling 5-3.
As mentioned, this tournament helps evaluate players for the upcoming World Juniors. This year's tournament will take place in Ottawa and run from December 26, 2024, to January 5, 2025. Other prospects who did not participate in this tournament but may be at the tournament include Tom Willander for Sweden and Basile Sansonnens for Switzerland.
