Despite tying the game late in the third period, Team Canada fell 3-2 in a shootout to Team Sweden at the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase. Of the three Vancouver Canucks prospects eligible to play, only defenceman Sawyer Mynio dressed for Team Canada, while Melvin Fernström was a scratch for Team Sweden. Anthony Romani is also part of Team Canada's roster for the event but was assigned to Team White, who will play in Canada's next game against Finland.
As for Mynio, he was partnered with Calgary Flames prospect Zayne Parekh against Sweden. Mynio was coming off a two-point performance as he helped Team Canada Red defeat Team Canada White on Tuesday. While Mynio will not play Friday, he could be in the lineup Saturday when Canada plays Team USA to wrap up their tournament.
As for Fernström, his next opportunity could also come Friday as Sweden faces Team USA. Fernström has already faced Team USA twice in this tournament, recording a power play assist and four penalty minutes. Game time is set for 1:00 pm PT, which will follow Team Canada's game versus Finland, which starts at 10 am PT.
