Quinn Hughes had a goal and an assist, while Conor Garland scored the game-winner with under two minutes to play as the Vancouver Canucks (47-21-8) defeated the Arizona Coyotes (31-39-5) 2-1 on Wednesday. Arturs Silovs also had a strong game in his second start of the season, stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced. With the victory, Vancouver hit the 47-win mark for the sixth time in history, while their 102 points are the most by a Canucks team since 2011-12 when Vancouver took home the Presidents' Trophy.
While it was tense until the end, the Canucks were the better team and deserved this win. They had the edge in shots, hits and takeaways, while their only blemish on the night was a power play goal by Dylan Guenther. While there are still areas that need to be fixed, like Vancouver only scoring two goals against one of the worst defensive teams in the league, the Canucks were able to collect two points which will go a long way in their pursuit of the Pacific Division title.
Quotes
Arturs Silovs on the Canucks performance against the Coyotes:
"There is a lot of commitment. Great two periods. They gave a lot to me to work on, and strongly finished the third period. Scored in the last five minutes and great things happened.
Conor Garland on Vancouver's performance against Arizona:
"It's a big win for us. Our kill did a great job for us all night. It's tough to get that last one. It's a tough penalty, but it is what it is. We rebounded; we played really well today. We deserved to win that game, so it's nice to come out on top."
Rick Tocchet on Arturs Silovs game:
"Looks like a veteran in there. Very solid, looks big in the net. Even from the bench, he just looks big. Really like the poise in the kid."
Rick Tocchet on playing Mark Friedman as a forward:
"I just thought a guy like Friedman has been working his butt off for us. I thought he could give us some energy, and I thought he did a nice job for us. We tried it, and I thought Frieds (Friedman) was really good. He was good on the bench, too; he adds a lot."
