With seven games remaining on the schedule, the Vancouver Canucks are trying to round into playoff form. With 46 victories on the campaign, Vancouver still has a chance to hit the 50-win mark while also capturing their first Pacific Division title in franchise history. Here is a look at their shooting and goal-scoring trends through 65 games using the NHL's newest tool, NHL EDGE.

Despite some issues recently, the Canucks are still one of the best offensive teams in the NHL. Their 3.44 goals per game ranks sixth, while their 258 total goals rank fifth. A big reason for that is their shooting percentage, which still ranks first at 12.2%.

Diving into Vancouver's shooting percentage, the big reason why they are above 12% is that they have a league-leading high-danger shooting percentage of 23.3%. For context, the league average is 19.7%, showing just how far above they are compared to most teams in the NHL. The Canucks have also done an excellent job converting on long-range chances, as their 4.3% shooting percentage is in the 93rd percentile. Lastly, they are still struggling to capitalize on mid-range shots, with their 10.5% conversion rate being slightly lower than the league average.

One of the reasons Vancouver has struggled to score recently is that they are not taking enough shots. While this wasn't a significant issue at the beginning of the season, it is starting to cause problems now. As for the EDGE numbers, they back up this claim that the Canucks are struggling to generate shots. Vancouver ranks below the league average in long-range shots (445) and mid-range shots (553) this season. While they have done better at high-danger shots, ranking in the 71st percentile with 621, these numbers show Vancouver is trying to create the perfect play rather than get pucks on the net. As has been evident the last few weeks, this strategy is not working anymore, as the Canucks have seen their goals per game slowly drop as we get closer to the end of the regular season.

Lastly, as expected, the Canucks are being propped up by their ability to score high-danger goals. Their 145 high-danger goals rank in the 96th percentile, while their 58 mid-range goals are below the league average. They are also near the top of long-ranger goals as their 19 rank in the 85th percentile this year. As has been the case all season, Vancouver needs to start converting on mid-range chances; otherwise, they could struggle in the playoffs.

At this point of the season, the Canucks need to be fine-tuning their game and experimenting more with their shot-creating. As mentioned, Vancouver is too focused on making the perfect play when, sometimes, a simple shot toward the net might be the right play at that moment. With the postseason on the horizon, the hope is the Canucks can boost some of these numbers and round into a more dangerous team in the offensive zone.
