Welcome to this edition of the Vancouver Canucks post-game analytics report. This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on Vancouver's most recent 5-4 overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

While the game needed overtime, the Canucks were the more dominant team from an analytics perspective. At even strength, Vancouver held a 24-12 scoring chances advantage while also winning the high-danger scoring chances battle 11-3. Overall, the Canucks carried the flow of play for most of the game, which included a 14-1 even-strength scoring chances advantage in the second period.

The biggest positive from the heatmap is that Vancouver kept the crease area relatively clean. Most of Detroit's shots came from the faceoff dots, thanks to the Canucks ability to box out and clear loose pucks. Vancouver also did a good job of blocking initial shot attempts, especially Noah Juulsen, who finished with a game-high five blocked shots.

As for a standout line, that would be the trio of Dakota Joshua, Pius Suter and Conor Garland. During their 9:28 together, the Canucks held a 7-2 scoring chances advantage and won the high-danger scoring chances battle 3-0. While it took a little bit of time, this trio seems to have found their groove and, like last year, are dominating the play in the offensive zone.

Lastly, Elias Pettersson played one of his best games of the season against the Red Wings. He recorded three primary assists, had two blocked shots and finished the game with an even-strength xGF% of 63.69%. With J.T. Miller out of the lineup, Pettersson continues to step up his game and prove why he is one of the centers in the NHL.
