Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks 3-2, Game 4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

For the third consecutive game, Vancouver lost the analytics battle to Edmonton. At even strength, the Oilers had a 21-18 scoring chances advantage while they also won the high-danger scoring chances battle 8-3. While the Canucks are playing well defensively, they are struggling to produce quality in the offensive zone, which is one of the main reasons they fell 3-2 in Game 4.

When looking at the heatmap, it shows just how inefficient Vancouver was in the offensive zone. The Canucks were only able to generate chances from one side of the ice, with the "guts of the ice" virtually clean. Ultimately, Vancouver made life easy for Calvin Pickard, who finished the night facing only three high-danger shots in all situations.

Lastly, the best Canucks player was easily Quinn Hughes. During his 20:07 of even-strength ice time, Vancouver held a 10-4 shots advantage and a 13-3 scoring chances advantage. Hughes also finished with an xGF% of 70.49 and was the only player to eclipse the 57% mark. It is clear the Canucks captain was trying everything he could to get the team going and was one of the few players the analytics looked favourable on by the end of the game.
