Vancouver Canucks defenseman was hit with a phone hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety for his cross-check against Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman was hit with a phone hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety for his cross-check against Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid.

Soucy was given a two-minute minor penalty for his actions at the 20-minute mark of the third period of game three.

He caught the Oilers superstar up high, partly because of the cross-check that fellow Canucks d-man Nikita Zadorov threw just before. The DoPS fined Zadorov for his actions.

The altercation started after Soucy pushed McDavid, and the Oilers forward responded with a wicked two-handed slash to Soucy's legs, causing things to escalate further. McDavid hasn't faced any supplemental discipline yet, but given that Zadorov and Soucy have, it is likely McDavid won't get anything for his action.

Soucy could be facing a suspension, but it can't last more than five games. Soucy is a key defender for the Canucks, and losing him for even one game would be a detriment to the defense. The date and time of Soucy's hearing have not been announced, but it will be before game four on Tuesday.

Sportsnet's Jeff Marek compares Soucy's cross-check to Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly's play against the Ottawa Senators' Ridley Greig during the regular season. Marek says these two plays are not a "hockey play."

Whatever happens with the hearing, the rivalry between the Canucks and Oilers just got to another level of hatred.
