Welcome back to another Memorable Match from the Vancouver Canucks’ 2024–25 season. Last time, we looked at the team’s match against the Calgary Flames on November 12. This week, we’ll look at the game after it — a 5–2 loss to the New York Islanders on November 14.

While the game itself was negative overall, the part that makes this match memorable is the readdition of Dakota Joshua to the Canucks’ lineup. Joshua was diagnosed with testicular cancer during the 2024 off-season and missed the first month and a half of Vancouver’s season while recovering. After a few weeks of skating and training to get himself re-accustomed to play, Joshua made his season debut on the 14th.
“Feeling alive is the best way to describe it, that I am back doing what I love and I am back in the mix, once again being an NHL player,” he had told NHLPA.com after his first game back.
Only a couple of nights after, the Canucks held their annual Hockey Fights Cancer Night against the Nashville Predators. As part of the opening ceremony, Joshua took the faceoff, with the puck being dropped by twin brothers Weston and Bennett Openshaw. Joshua had met the brothers, who had been diagnosed with leukaemia at two years old, during a team practice.
While this season was full of disappointments, seeing Joshua return was one of the positives. Now, Joshua will to enter the off-season with playing time to look back on.
“It was better down the stretch. That’s when I found my best,” he said in his end of season media availability. “Was hard to feel good about my game for most of the season, but it’s been good to get it going late, and just got to build off that and carry that into next season.”
Canucks 2024–25 Memorable Matches will be posted every Tuesday until June 11.
